How To Make Your Living Room Luxurious

Creating a luxurious living room is something close to my heart when designing for my clients, I want them to feel like they’re stepping into their dream home the minute they walk through the door.

There’s something very special about relaxing in a living room that has all the hallmarks of a luxurious space. I’m not just talking about the decor, of course using sumptuous fabrics and wallpapers will certainly offer this but I’m talking about how it feels and works as a space for you, that is the ultimate goal.

Even if you may not have the budget for a fully designed living room I’m going to share with you some of the very things I include when designing a luxurious living room that you can easily create in your home.

Luxurious Lighting

I’m starting with lighting as this is one of the most important design elements that is often overlooked. So when I say luxury, I don’t necessarily mean a high price tag item.

Getting the lighting right for your living room is so important. Think about what you need and how you use the room if any tasks are required, i.e. for reading or hobbies.

  • Do you require picture lights for artwork or wall sconces?

  • Do you have a bookcase with shelving that could be enhanced by lighting.

  • Do you need floor sockets for table lamps placed on console tables behind sofas ?

Luxury is having a good lighting plan

If you can really think about your lighting plan before decorating, it will make or break a room.

Layering lighting to enhance and bring depth into the area as well as some of these on dimmer switches will control and soften the room.

  • Ceiling Light

  • Floor lamps

  • Table lamps

  • Task lamps

  • Wall sconces

TIP

A favourite way to change up old table lamps when I’m styling and furnishing, especially if the shades are looking a bit dated or shabby is to replace them with new shades which are gold lined, choose outer shades in linens or silks for a very luxurious look.

Curtains

A luxurious living room will always have full length curtains for a truly elegant style. At HID we tend to interline all of our curtains for ultimate luxury. When clients have the experience of an interlined curtain they find it hard to use a lined curtain again, they just look so lux.

Having tracks and poles installed at the right height will also make the room feel much more luxurious as your eye will be drawn up to take in the elegant drape of the curtains which of course creates height to a room.

Electronic tracks and poles will make life so much easier with the press of a button. You can book a consultation to discuss this further here

Cushions

Another simple but effective way to create luxury is to replace old cushions if they’re no longer holding their shape and look a bit sad. I will change clients cushions for spring and autumn so that they always have a new look.

Even if you replace them with high street cushions use this tip for a more luxurious look.

  • Remove the insert filler and use feather and down, which is the best in my opinion.

  • Size up with your filler, so if you have a 20”x 20” cushion use a 22” x 22” cushion filler.

  • Use luxurious fabrics that have a mix of textures, silks and linens or velvets.

Carpets & Rugs

If the carpet or rug is shabby and worn, there’s no way around that, it will have to be replaced. If it’s just a matter of cleaning it, have it cleaned professionally and stain guarded.

I like to have a large area rug with all furniture placed on top or at the very least the front legs.

TIP

Don’t make the classic mistake of using a small rug in your living room. go as big as you can afford.

Flowers & Scent

There’s nothing quite like being greeted with a beautiful scent when you walk into your living room or a stunning arrangement of flowers. This can be an affordable luxury.

You don’t have to have an expensive arrangement made you can easily arrange a few bunches of flowers and add some greenery to it to bulk it out. I will often use faux foliage (you have have to invest in a little more to look authentic but you will have it for a very long time).

Accessories

This is the last step in the design process when everything comes together and the magic happens, the result is a super luxurious home.

Having a well curated collection of accessories which you can even change out and use in different rooms for an instant new look, will always portray a well thought out luxurious living room.
