Make Your New House A Home

Moving home this year? It may be one of the most stressful things in life which is why we need all the help we can get, a handy moving home guide just might make things run a bit more smoothly for you and create a homely feel to your new abode.

Moving to a new house can be a roller coaster experience, you’re excited to be moving into your new home but it can be emotional leaving your old home behind, the friendships you made over the years can be difficult to leave behind not to mention the physical side of it, packing boxes, dismantling furniture only to reassemble it when you get to your new home and hoping it will look right and fit in to your new space.

There are a few things that you can do to make this process run smoothly.

Make It Manageable

  • Declutter and decide whether you want to take it with you. This will stop you from bringing all the old stuff with you that you never got around to sorting.

  • Essentials - Separate things you need to take with you for the first night i.e. chargers, kettle, tea, coffee, loo roll, toiletries and any other home comforts.

  • Babysitters - Having kids or pets looked after on the day of the move will make things go a lot smoother.

  • Label Boxes - It’s easier to do this by room and make sure it’s labelled top and sides with content and info for easy location.

Create A Homely Feel

It’s nice to make your house feel a little more homely by ordering window treatments before moving in as it takes roughly 4-6 weeks to order bespoke furnishings. If this is too much to handle, have some little blinds installed for privacy to get you moved in.

Most new home owners want to concentrate on the main rooms like the living room and bedrooms.

Having bedrooms ready to sleep in that night, especially if you have younger children, you will want them to feel less stressed with all of their favourite things to help with the transition. A new paint colour that they’ve had help choosing will make them feel like they’ve created their own little space that they love.

A great mattress and luxurious bedlinen to slip into will make you feel refreshed over the next few days as you start to unpack and settle in.

Furniture layout - Hopefully you will have had a chance to work out if your existing furniture is going to work in the new space. A spatial floor plan is perfect to get an idea of the perfect layout of the room.

Lighting - It’s best to embrace this early on (before decorating), decide if there are enough sockets in the rooms. Knowing how the room will be used will help with this, will the room be used partly as a home office? Is it open plan? Getting the lighting right early on creates a more homely environment and will be well worth it.

Window Treatments

Curtains

Of course the best way to make a house feel warm and cosy is dressing the windows.

Having curtains takes away that echoey sound that only curtains and blinds can provide. Other benefits are

  • Insulation - An interlined curtain works wonders for this.

  • Sound absorption

  • Privacy - Your home will look lived in. You can decide to do this early on whether your new sofa has arrived or not, at Heather Interior Design we pride ourselves on choosing fabrics that are classic in style and design, they look luxurious and you will love them for years to come. Maybe you loved the bay window in the living room but now you’re faced with how to dress the window. An ordinary pole just won’t do, as you will want the curtains to glide across seamlessly and have faith that the curtains and pole are installed correctly. HID takes the frustration out of this for you as it’s all done under one roof, from fabric choice, measuring and install. That’s one less thing to worry about.
